5 ways that will make your picky eater love trying new food

If you have a child, there are high chances that every now and then they turn into picky eaters and every meal becomes a battle. If that’s the case at your home, here are some tips that might help you get your kid excited about trying new food (yes, the veggies as well!).

1. Re-create popular dishes using healthy ingredients

Pizza or hamburgers don’t need to be unhealthy if you prepare them at home using fresh and nutritious ingredients. You can prepare your own healthy sauce and replace the wheat flour with wholegrain flour. Think of different ways of preparing popular dishes: add pear to the hamburger or make french fries out of vegetables.

2. Cook together with your child

Let your kid help! Some activities are perfectly fine even for kids as young as 4 years old! Even if that means simple mixing with the spoon, the child will get a feeling of participation in the cooking and will look forward to eating the meals they helped prepare.

3. Make the meals look fun

Kids are more likely to eat car-shaped sandwiches or colorful salads rather than plain-looking dishes. Get creative with your child inventing new shapes and objects or adding different colors.

4. Go shopping together

Create a shopping list of what you’re going to need and head to the shop together. It’s also a great occasion to teach kids about budget and finances: show them the price of each product and help them calculate the total cost.

5. Discover the new cuisines

Another way to get kids excited about trying out new food is introducing them to cultures and regions through different cuisines.  Every week or month you can choose a country and talk with your child about its culture, history and food.

5 benefits of cooking with your child

Are you living with a small picky eater? One way of dealing with a kid who is choosy during meals is cooking with them! By creating kids-friendly recipes and encouraging your child to help, they won’t resist to eat up the meals they created.

Jamie Olivier provides another reason for cooking with kids: the raising obesity in children. ”More concerning still, is the statistic suggesting that only 21% of parents are cooking from scratch every day, which means that the majority of kids are still eating processed food. When you read figures like this, it’s hardly a surprise to learn that around one in five children is overweight or obese before they even start primary school” says the famous cook in his article Why Empowering Parents to Cook With Their Kids Helps Families to Thrive.

Therefore, cooking with kids is not only an opportunity for creating unprocessed & nutritious meals, but also shapes healthy cooking habits in children from  the very beginning.
